The aim of Practical Skills is: “To help people back into the routine of work by having structured supervised activity.”
Each person has had the chance to experience a variety of work activities from gardening to painting in church to hard landscaping in the new garden behind the Key Centre.
At the same time good relationships are built up, with both individuals and outside agencies. These relationships carry on after the initial placement period, with social activities at Christmas and trips up to Dalby Forest on a regular basis throughout the year.
We have people from a variety of backgrounds who have come form our Learning Department or referrals from employment agencies who come to us for work experience of up to thirteen weeks. We have had a placement from the Probation Service which we called our Supervision Program. Others have come to us as referrals from Doorstep. Volunteers from church have also helped on a supervisory basis.
Practical Skills is not initially about getting the job done, though some excellent work has been carried out. The primary task of Practical Skills is to help people feel at ease and get used to a work environment. Working with people is also an excellent means of befriending men who would normally have no contact with the Church.
